Youth Information, Advice, Counselling and Support services

Youth Access has published Stretched to the Limit. The report is the most recent of a series of reports from Youth Access into the funding situation in Youth Information, Advice, Counselling and Support (YIACS) services. It finds that:

  • Demand on YIACS’s services continues to grow, particularly in relation to mental health, social welfare problems, domestic/sexual violence and sexual exploitation.
  • The YIACS sector’s overall financial position is stabilising, but many agencies remain in a precarious state as a result of ongoing cuts from statutory sector funders and the erosion of organisations’ financial reserves.
  • Many YIACS are managing to protect their front-line services and meet increasing demand despite diminishing resources, but this is unlikely to be sustainable.

It concludes that “local authority youth services are increasingly trying to deliver one-to-one advice and support themselves even though the evidence is clear that the voluntary sector does it more effectively.”
