Leaving care services

The National Care Advisory Service (NCAS) has published Funding leaving care: making the cut, one year on. The report summarises the findings of the second National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum (NLCBF) survey, outlining how the austerity measures are affecting leaving care services one year on from the initial 2011 assessment. It found that “the number of young people in and leaving care has increased, yet budgets have remained static or decreased in the majority of services.” Of the 34 managers who responded to the survey 32% had seen a cut in their budget since last year and only 15% saw an increase. Two thirds of the managers surveyed were working with larger cohorts than last year and on average they reported an increase of around 10% in numbers of young people. 74% of the 34 managers reported that other services or assistance that they rely on to support young people were being cut.
