Youth services analysis

Unite the Union has published the results of a Freedom of Information (FoI) search of 430 English and Welsh councils of youth service spending. The research reveals that 20% of the country’s youth centres will shut in the next year alone. It found that spending on services for young people has dropped by an average of 12.3 per cent in the past twelve months, down from an average of £116 to £102.49 per year, which equals 28 pence per day on young people. It said there were vastly different approaches, and “the most savage cutters are Norfolk county council, Somerset county council, Lancashire county council, Oxfordshire and Birmingham – all Conservative-run or Con- Dem-led councils.”
