Cuts to disabled and deaf services

Skill: National Bureau for Students with Disabilities, a campaigning charity for disabled students, is to close. Skill is the only pan disability charity that focuses on promoting equality for disabled people in education, training and employment.

The National Deaf Children’s Society has found that almost one in five councils in England have cut services for deaf children, some by scrapping posts for specialist teachers and cutting budgets for radio aids. It found that there have been cuts in 28 local authorities. The charity estimates that 75% of deaf children in England do not have a statement of special educational needs (SEN), which would give them a legal entitlement to support. This puts them at a greater risk of losing specialist help.
