Survey shows councils reducing youth services

A study conducted by the Local Government Association (LGA) has found that cuts to council-run services will bring dramatic reductions in children’s services, libraries and youth clubs. The survey of finance directors from 40% of local authorities also found that two-thirds of councils are embarking on privatisation programmes to cut costs.

The survey asked finance directors to list the services facing above-average cuts. 58% said that their central services were getting greater spending reductions, 22% said services such as youth clubs and play groups, 16% said library services, 14% said early years services and 12% refuse collection services.

A Guardian article on cuts to children’s services gives further details of youth service cuts and argues that “the idea of youth services as a “universal” offer is being abandoned.”
