Estimates of local charity losses

NAVCA has estimated that 26,000 staff at local charities will lose their jobs this year. Chief executive Kevin Curley said that government must ring-fence funding for the voluntary sector. Curley has also pointed to Reading Council as evidence that councils do not have to cut funding for the voluntary sector, “Reading Council has increased funding to the voluntary and community sector by £200,000 to more than £7m.”

NAVCA has also estimated that the number of people employed amongst NAVCA’s members could be reduced by 25% as a result of spending cuts. Curley said that he anticipated that his member Councils for Voluntary Action would reduce employee numbers from 6,890 to around 5,100.
