Wigan, Hampshire and Dorset

The False Economy cuts blog has reported that Wigan Connexions, the youth careers advice and information service, has cut around 30 FTE (full-time equivalent) posts during 2010/11 – from a total of 75 FTE – following a 40 percent funding cut.

Hampshire County Council is preparing to make savings of £55m this year and a total of 376 posts in children’s services are set to be axed. This represents 11% of the children’s services workforce of 3,492. Council chiefs have said a similar reduction will have to be made in 2012/13. Child protection and safeguarding services are to be shielded from budget cuts, which suggests that youth services may be at risk.

Dorset Youth Association faces a funding cut of £166,667 per year following cuts to v. This will lead to a loss of 6 direct delivery staff and the closure of a youth volunteering programme for over 800 young people. As a result of Capacitybuilders being cut they will lose a further £96,000 that supports the development of youth services in Dorset and provides a voice for rural communities across the County.
