Survey of children’s services cuts

A survey by CYP Now has revealed that children’s services budgets are being cut by an average of 13% in the coming financial year. The survey attracted responses from 25 directors of children’s services and shows that for 2011/12, cuts in individual councils range from 6% to 25%.

All respondents predicted job losses in the financial year ahead, with a total of at least 3,624 redundancies predicted by the 21 directors of children’s services who gave details on how the cuts will affect jobs in their departments.

The survey also found that youth provision, early years, Connexions and school improvement services will bear the brunt of the cuts, with 56% of respondents saying that youth services would be among the hardest hit. 80% of directors warned that children and young people will be adversely affected by spending reductions. Directors identified the pace at which savings have to be made as a major challenge, and some said they were struggling to maintain early intervention services.
