Cumbria, Staffordshire and London

Cumbria County Council is consulting on proposals to make savings of £50m over the next four years, and it and has notified local unions that 611 jobs could be axed. A county council spokesman confirmed that half the jobs at risk are in children’s services, “because many of the government grants where we think there will be cuts are in children’s services”. Services at risk include  child and adolescent mental health services, Connexions, youth offending services and services to tackle teenage pregnancy. Connexions in Staffordshire also looks set to close by April.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London is concerned about the potential impact of proposals to change London Councils’ London Boroughs Grants Scheme, a £26.4m voluntary sector grants scheme. London Councils is currently consulting on whether individual councils should retain and spend the money locally. This change, combined with a lack of ring fencing for any specific projects, could mean that funding will be cut off for recipient projects. Johnson has said there should a be “a more phased or transitional approach” to any changes, as they could leave organisations with only three months’ notice of funding cuts.
